let's dive into this gangster shit Carlton Duncan Hines went by the name Sea Town came into this world April of 1971 up in the Bronx New York his moms Teresa Hines raised him Carlton's pops wasn't around but he had three older brothers Kevin Kenny and Keith they was posted up in the South Bronx Melrose housing projects which was grimy as hell during the era Carlton was coming up as a youngin but even with all that madness around them Carlton's moms did everything in her power to keep her boys away from trouble keep them moving in the right direction and give them the best life she could possibly provide Carlton had crazy love for his moms and wanted to give her a better situation and as time went on it became obvious that he might have a gift that could get his whole family up out of them projects he'd be spending his nights at ps1 park hooping working on his craft day in day out hundreds of layups hundreds of jump shots and by the time he hit 12 years old he was showing so much potential that he was bodying cats five years older than him and by 14 his name was echoing through abcd camps Nike camps and he had colleges trying to recruit him straight out of junior high multiple programs was on him he sharpened his skills at gouchos gym known for them rough games and that intense competition under coach Dave McCullough and that's where he picked up the fundamentals and that toughness when high school came around Carlton had mad schools from all over the city trying to recruit him they knew if he was on their squad they'd have a powerhouse and a lot of them did whatever they had to do to get Carlton to rock with their program including a coach named stand dinner who convinced Carlton to leave his Bronx hood and go to high school up in Harlem at Manhattan Center known for famous alumni like Cameron Giles who went on to be the face of the diplomat movement and former bad boy artist and 1990 superstar mase but during his time at Manhattan Center Carlton Hines was that dude and they became a superpower Carlton became dominant in the whole city going up against future NBA cats like Kenny Anderson who ended up at Georgia Tech and became the second overall pick in the NBA draft more and more you'd see coaches coming in and out of the Melrose housing projects hunting for Carlton trying to get him to sign with their school Carlton had over 30 scholarship offers from programs all across the nation but there was one particular school he really had his heart set on and that was Syracuse he wanted to play for coach Jim Boeheim and the more his squad won the more spotlight was shining on Carlton everybody wanted a piece of him wanted to know what college he was heading to and if he wasn't going to college was he going straight to the league so it wasn't nothing unusual to always see college coaches lurking around the projects looking for Carlton but Carlton started having some problems in high school he got too comfortable with being a superstar and when it came to his academics he didn't really take them serious his coach Stan dinner would look the other way on Carlton's grades because he needed him on that basketball court to win games heading into his junior season of high school there started to be a lot of changes happening in Carlton's world his coach dipped for a better opportunity and the new coaching staff was bumping heads with Carlton Carlton's moms started feeling like with all the media attention and the issues he was starting to catch at school with the coaches and his grades that he needed a fresh start and that fresh start was going to be in Maine at the main central institute high school under head coach Paul Pelicani and alongside future NBA all-star and NBA champion Sam Cassell who spoke real highly of playing alongside Carlton Hines Syracuse had the biggest gym Carlton Hines had ever laid eyes on the carrier dome this was real progress he made a verbal commitment to the orange during his junior year South Bronx was about to be in his rearview mirror this was the final stop before the NBA there was only one little condition he had to finish high school his moms decision ended up being the right move and at the start of his junior year Carlton Hines got a visit at the Maine Central Institute from none other than Jim Boeheim he chopped it up with Carlton for hours about his life and his future and he told him you got a full ride to Syracuse University the only thing I need you to do is graduate from Maine Central Institute and keep your grades up that's it Carlton went on to dominate his junior year averaging 25 points a game and everything was going smooth the only problem was Carlton was always homesick he missed the Bronx he missed Melrose housing projects there's a big difference in the love he would get in Maine and the love he would get in Harlem or the Bronx and Carlton he missed that love his moms would tell him you're not missing nothing here the projects ain't going nowhere just stay focused on what you need to do in Maine so you can go to college but Carlton he just missed home too much whenever he would come for the weekend he would never want to go back to Maine his moms would always convince him to go back but entering his senior season he got into a heated argument with his coach Paul Pelikani over using the phone after hours according to the coach Carlton just kind of snapped and he was like you know what if you're going to have that type of attitude you off the team you can go home and Carlton was just like hey you want me to go home I'm leaving according to Carlton's moms she felt like this is what he wanted to do that's why it didn't take too much to push him away but by doing this he put his scholarship to Syracuse in jeopardy and he put his future in jeopardy and once Carlton was back in New York City he would try to attend Stevenson High which was known to have a real good basketball program but school officials would rule Carlton ineligible once they found out that he was using a fake address he was turned in by another coach in New York City who didn't want to see him play when Carlton refused to play for his team he decided to turn that information in and now he was ruled as ineligible after being ruled ineligible for basketball for his senior year Carlton became so depressed that he dropped out of school just four months before graduating now his hoop dreams were fading and fading fast according to his moms he would often lay around the crib feeling down and she would tell him if you're not playing ball or going to school you're going to have to get a job this the real world but Carlton he wasn't trying to hear it but things would get even worse for him because one morning he told his moms that he was going over a friend's crib to get a pair of sneakers and that he would be right back but after hours passed his moms started to wonder where he was at he still hadn't returned eventually a neighbor by the name of Mr Muhammad came to her door and told her that she needed to come quick and that Carlton was in big trouble the story goes while Carlton was hanging out in the Melrose housing projects he ran into an associate by the name of Tweedle some kind of altercation broke out and Tweedle brought out a knife and went at Carlton Carlton picked up a broken bottle and threw it at Tweedle but it hit him in the throat he fell to the ground and began to bleed out Carlton from complete shock of what just happened he took off running eventually the ambulance would arrive on scene and take Tweedle away but he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital now Carlton Hines former basketball superstar and NBA prospect was wanted for murder he would go on the run for the next 11 days and he wouldn't even tell his moms where he was at after being on the run for 11 days Carlton's moms convinced him to turn himself in this case would get a lot of media coverage and Carlton would be sent to jail but after one month a judge would rule that he acted in self-defense and all charges would be dropped it was a real confusing time in Carlton's life but he did have a daughter to take care of so he needed to get some money and he went and got it the best way he knew how on the basketball court he would go to different boroughs throughout New York City playing in big money tournaments sponsored by drug dealers and he would make up to $10,000 playing in these tournaments but that wasn't enough for Carlton he wanted the lifestyle that the drug dealers had the money the cars the jewelry and the women it was time for Carlton to choose a path and he would choose the streets his moms would do all that she could to keep him away from the streets but there wasn't no stopping it and one day when she found a shoebox full of cash she knew that something was up and she tried everything in her power to get him to turn it around but Carlton was too far gone at that point he was moving weight through the projects getting money hand over fist and the streets had a grip on him that nothing could break once you get caught up in that life it's hard to escape and Carlton was learning that the hard way he went from being the hottest basketball prospect in the city to being just another hustler on the corner moving product and making enemies left and right the money was flowing but so was the bloodshed and the violence Carlton was caught between two worlds the world of legitimate success and the world of street life and in the end the streets won out he got deeper and deeper into the drug game making moves that would eventually catch up with him the law was always watching and Carlton knew it was only a matter of time before everything came crashing down but he couldn't stop himself he was addicted to the fast money and the street life and that addiction would be his downfall Carlton Duncan Hines also known as Sea Town represents a tragic story of wasted potential and the destructive power of the street life he had all the tools to make it out the projects and change his family's situation forever but one bad decision set off a chain of events that altered the course of his entire existence the loss of his basketball scholarship the depression and the turn to the streets showed how quickly a promising future can be destroyed when you lose your way Carlton's legacy serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of staying focused on your goals and the people who love you because once you step into that street life it's almost impossible to step back out his moms did everything she could to save him but sometimes love isn't enough when the streets are calling and a young man is searching for a way to survive and make money fast Carlton Hines will be remembered as a talented athlete who had the world at his feet but chose a path that led to his own destruction and the destruction of everyone around him his story is a reminder that your choices define your destiny and that the ghetto is always ready to swallow up the next young talent who lets their guard down for just a moment rest in peace Sea Town your legacy lives on in the streets of the Bronx and in the hearts of those who remember the kid who could have been great.
