ghetto fabulous on that crazy date September 11th 2001 by that time he already had his name buzzing heavy on the mixtape and DVD grind building real noise in the streets this album wasn't just his official stamp in the rap world it was also putting his whole squad street family on the map from day one fab showed he was elite with the pen going bar for bar with the biggest names out there spots like DJ clue's mixtapes and smack DVD became his proving grounds where he showcased his lyrical skill and repped for street family the crew had his brother Paul Cain and a tight knit group of day ones coming off like a bunch of starving young wolves ready to eat in the game but you know how it go in New York when rapping and the streets cross paths it ain't take long before the street element started creeping in fabulous was getting watched and then he was it it was like we did a big surveil thing we looked at a few things and then that was it such as people he hung with certain locations he frequented uh any other people had different crimes that for themselves I ain't gonna do nothing to kill you you're gonna steal us today I'm like the way that I'm gonna be fine I know they could go and be that close to a boy you like to is they stuck for the whole thing they could be people who get pulled yeah they are they could probably be that that's it all I see go for that let me see you hit that till the face of all the sun man everybody's out here man size done man I'm saying it's nothing man I'm saying I'm just thinking I don't live what I speak I want to get at me man point blank period man I'm saying while fabulous kept a squeaky clean look to the public behind closed doors street family's moves started getting noticed for reasons way beyond the music all for the rare Lamborghini stolen from the valley at the Buckhead intercontinental hotel the case became an internet sensation and tonight we have the video in moments ago we confirmed why the DA won't pursue the case consumer investigator Jim Strickland broke this story and now he's first with tape of the crime Jim edge on the video from the hotel's own security system shows two men getting away with the car the victim now complains they're going to get away with the crime this was this was it my dream car beeves left there at bar gas goes car crashed and trashed his attorney just got the video showing what happened on that the Bellman gave the keys to the wrong person for mistake it was in the state that white hot rod is bar gas goes Lamborghini at quarter till five a.m. on January 31st sources confirmed somewhere in this entourage is the rapper fabulous as they leave the intercontinental outside two of the entourage neither is the rapper get the keys to the Lamborghini from the Bellman they climb in as if they own the car the men soon drive off with the rest of the group following in the minivan I would wonder how many crimes go at least unpunished when there's a surveillance video that shows what happened we've obtained an email from a police detective who confirms the performer knows the suspects but that DA Paul Howard would not sign off on a subpoena to the grand jury to force fabulous to name names the detective says there are no other leads the Lambo is at a dead end are these guys gonna get away with it if I had to guess I would say yes how does it make you feel to say that and it makes me feel like Eric's not gonna get justice bar gas go is suing the hotel I did nothing wrong and to be forced into this situation where I have to pay an attorney now to protect my interests just it just seems wrong Paul Howard issued a statement just before newstime putting the responsibility for this on the cops our tells me police had promised immunity in exchange for help finding the car he says quote I believe the integrity of the promise was more important than pursuing suspects no response from the hotel's lawyer or for the publicist for fabulous in a dark news write up from June 9th 1998 with the headline rap star Foxy Brown saved after failed robbery the daily news broke down another wild story about a major home invasion in Brooklyn this time it was Foxy Brown her moms and two other people who got targeted in a bold push in robbery attempt at their prospect heights brownstone the whole thing jumped off around 11 a.m. the day before the two intruders muscled their way into the spot but dipped out with nothing after Foxy Brown's mother Judith Marchan then 49 slid out and hit 911 from a neighbor's crib at the time police commissioner Howard Safer said the case hadn't been connected to the June 30th shooting of Wutang clans old dirty bastard who caught one in a robbery attempt at a bedford stuyvesant apartment according to detective George naggy the robbers rolled up acting like they were delivering a package once inside one of them yanked out a hammer and forced Judith into the first floor bathroom upstairs Foxy Brown just 19 her brother Gavin 20 and their friend Chattara Jenkins 19 were knocked out sleep the intruders didn't put hands on nobody but the shock of them being there was a cold reminder of the street life they couldn't duck especially in BK's grimy blocks cops flooded the scene thinking it was a full blown hostage situation they ran up in the crib only to find no trace of the robbers but grabbed up Foxy Brown her brother and their friend tossing them outside in cuffs like they were the ones wilding a 16 year old neighbor named Justin Thomas told the post at the time that Foxy was heated crying hysterically and shook up she looked like she couldn't believe what was happening Foxy would later ride with detectives to the 77th precinct station house to drop a statement while flipping through mug shots though no perps were ever bagged rumors were already floating that this could have been the work of street family it was information that there was guys going around in his group particularly the group that were going out the robbing of the wrappers their investigations with the robbing robbing foxy Brown our homestay and it was also another robbing of us to run so they used to all like you know to be a fucking phone that's a rally and stuff like that I had a radio buzzer there we got some hip hop cars you were seeing that was got pulled twice through that it was two reasons yet all wrong why was the position of the robbing no the two was really only guys who was in the call room there were people that were in your group at one point you know I don't know what happened with relationships you might have with these guys but that they were doing robberies on the other wrappers do you ever heard of it or I don't know about this we had information that some of his guys that traveled with him we're doing robberies of other wrappers and they were taking chains and then gold and things like that and they were going to a jeweler and they were getting a jeweler to knock down the jewelry and jeweler's resellant there's a prominent hat and jeweler that's been fenced in the skull and jewelry what do you know about that I'm never gonna be like that when they took to jeweler to die if you get where you're in jeweler he was involved in the murder in another state so and he was a prominent person so that became a really big problem because now you have always different units that want to get involved in some investigations that became like a problem so the FBI had to go to a lot more paperwork those long things that hadn't begun and then eventually you just got push to the side you know I'm just thinking guilty and before you know saying they say you're guilty before and then you got a clue that you're in those charges being considered against fabulous at that time and the investigation had to store somewhat these are the things that a lot of people don't know what's going on one of if not the main reason why fabulous and his squad caught that infamous reputation was an incident that led to the tragic death of one of their own 25 year old Shamele Makenley Shamele was the brother of duce ambassador and Rocafella affiliate Darrell mr. rugs Makenley who was a well known cat in Atlanta's nightlife scene it all went down on November 23rd 2007 outside the popular duvet nightclub in Manhattan Shamele got into a crazy altercation that was reportedly sparked by an attempted robbery according to the daily news Makenley tried to snatch a $10,000 chain from another clubgoer who just so happened to be a rapper himself Anthony Taylor a fellow Brooklyn native that attempted theft led to a violent confrontation that would escalate into a full blown street fight with multiple parties getting involved outside the club doors chaos erupted and in the thick of it all Shamele Makenley found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time during the melee gunshots rang out and Shamele took bullets that would prove fatal the young man was rushed to the hospital but the wounds were too severe and he didn't make it the streets had claimed another life and this time it was someone connected to Fabolous and his circle the investigation into Shamele's murder pointed investigators back to Street Family and the circle around Fabolous what made things worse was the pattern of violence that seemed to follow the crew from city to city from Atlanta to New York bodies were dropping and fingers kept pointing in their direction whether Fabolous himself was directly involved in the violence or if he was simply guilty by association the damage to his brand was already done the golden boy of hip hop who had come from nothing and built himself up through bars and hustle was now forever linked to street violence and the dark underside of the rap game detectives worked the case hard trying to connect the dots and piece together what went down that night but like so many cases involving hip hop crews and street politics the real truth stayed buried in the streets somebody knew something but nobody was talking and that code of silence kept many of these cases from ever seeing justice in a courtroom this was the reality that Fabolous had to navigate as his career continued on despite the cloud of suspicion and the weight of these incidents following his name throughout the industry he continued to drop music and maintain his relevance in the game but the streets had marked him and for many in hip hop the legacy of Fabolous became forever intertwined with the violence and criminality that plagued Street Family what Fabolous represents is a cautionary tale of what happens when the streets and the music industry collide and when a young talent rises too fast without leaving those street elements behind he proved himself as a lyricist and a craftsman but the choices made by him and those around him painted a different picture in the public eye today when people think of Fabolous they don't just think of classic verses and summer hits they remember the Lamborghini theft the home invasions and the murders his legacy is complicated because while he achieved success in rap he could never fully escape the gravity of the street life that built him into Street Family the rep for violence became stronger than the rep for music and that's a legacy that no amount of bars or chart success can fully rehabilitate Fabolous remains a towering figure in hip hop but he is a figure whose brilliance was overshadowed by the darkness that followed his every move a reminder that in this game sometimes your demons catch up with you no matter how far you try to run
