Johnny Curry and his twin brother Leonard came into this world in 1959 and came up in a mostly black lower middle class section of Detroit's east side just seven miles out from the heart of downtown. The environment the Curry's was raised in molded them into major players in Detroit's underground scene throughout the 1980s with Johnny being the more low-key calculated type of boss while Leonard who they called Leo was the flashy loud one and their little brother Rudell who everybody knew as Boo completed the trio known in the streets as little man and big man Johnny and Leo stepped into the drug hustle in the late 1970s getting it started with weed moves word is the startup cash for their whole thing came from their pops Samuel who went by Sammy Mac Curry back in 1978 the Curry brothers didn't waste no time leveling up their game switching from weed to dope and eventually taking over Detroit's east side with powder cocaine and crack when the 1980s hit the Curry's built up a whole network of 24 dope spots serving up a full menu marijuana heroin cocaine and crack for whoever was buying their whole setup was organized and ran smooth with Alan Hill senior's marathon station auto garage at 109 zero one east Warren in Detroit being the main spot where they stashed all the bread one of the brothers would make regular runs to the garage scooping up the profits making sure the money kept moving tight and secure the Curry's cocaine empire stayed fed through links with two major connect Sam doc Curry who was family and art Derek a heavy hitter in Detroit known for his high stakes drug smuggling moves Derek who had a whole fleet of four planes and two of them he supposedly copped from the rolling stones was the key to flying cocaine in from Miami when Derek's operation was at its peak his daily take hit $100,000 he was living that over the top lifestyle you could see it in his massive Detroit crib that had a marble floor basement and a pool with his initials built in the Curry success turned into a lifestyle of straight up flashy wealth both Johnny and Leo was pushing matching burgundy colored Ford Broncos decked out with them plush Eddie Bauer leather interiors showing off that twin bond and that money even their younger brother Rudell was in on it rolling in a similar styled blue Ford Bronco Johnny being the more reserved boss also kept a customized burlina just to show his taste for that exclusive ish on them sunny days the Curry's and their whole squad would pull up to Bel Isle Park a major hangout spot on the Detroit River these wasn't just casual kickbacks but a whole public display of their power and unity flexing their position and success all throughout Detroit's street and social scene the Curry's represented where style wealth and the raw grind of Detroit's drug game in the 1980s came together leaving a permanent stamp on the city's underworld the Curry twins wasn't just moving work they was also deep in Detroit's nightlife scene they turned spots like Royal Skateland into their own personal domains throwing late night functions that pulled crowds and mad attention when they wanted a more grown and sexy vibe they would slide to the lady night club and when they was feeling wild they hit up stokes a jumping spot with strippers and topless waitresses these places became part of their empire locations where power and influence was on full display Johnny Curry's personal situation added a whole other dimension of intrigue to his legend he dated and eventually wifed up Kathy Germaine Voulson the niece of Detroit Mayor Coleman A Young at the time this connection put Johnny in proximity to political power that almost nobody in the game could touch Kathy's father Willie Clyde Voulson Jr. wasn't no stranger to the streets having built his own name as a drug kingpin back in the 1970s and 80s after running illegal gambling Voulson switched to heroin and then cocaine locking in the Voulson name in Detroit's criminal legacy before she got with Johnny Kathy had been romantically connected to Detroit Piston star Vinnie the microwave Johnson a link that showed her ties to both the sports world and street life when Kathy got pregnant with Johnny's baby the baby shower went down at the Manoujian mansion the official residence of Mayor Young this whole event symbolized where Detroit's political elite and its criminal underground intersected with Johnny Curry standing right in the middle of it all during Coleman A Young's historic run as Detroit's first African-American mayor he controlled massive political influence and his niece Kathy Voulson used her family connection to her uncle to move through the city's power game Kathy reportedly tapped into this relationship to get access to confidential police intel about investigations targeting her and the Curry organization a major advantage when you playing at that level by 1984 the Curry Brothers had the feds watching them close the FBI and Detroit police kicked off a full blown investigation into their operations that ended up with federal agents secretly breaking into Johnny Curry's crib to install listening devices these moves showed how much heat was building on the Curry Empire around this time Rudell Boo Curry formed a tight relationship with Richard white boy Rick Wershay a local kid from their east side Detroit hood the two would frequently cruise through the streets in Rudell's blue Ford Bronco scooping girls and hitting up the Curry Brothers famous parties at Royal Skateland what the Curry's didn't know was that 14-year-old Wershay had been flipped as an informant by the FBI his close access to the Curry Circle made him an extremely valuable piece in the federal investigation feeding them information on their moves Wershay's role would later turn into one of Detroit's most legendary stories of betrayal showing the dangerous mix of youth crime and federal pressure in the city's chaotic drug era. Johnny Curry's marriage to Kathy Voulson in 1985 locked in his connections to Detroit's political power structure even tighter. Kathy's position as the niece of Mayor Coleman A. Young came with benefits including a Detroit police department security detail that was assigned to her led by Sergeant James Harris this relationship gave Johnny and his operation an aura of being untouchable letting him move with a feeling of invincibility in the city's underworld. Johnny's social standing wasn't just limited to Detroit he regularly linked up with high profile names sometimes bringing Richard white boy Rick Wershay along with him Wershay even though he was just a teenager became a regular presence in Johnny's glamorous lifestyle. Johnny brought Wershay to Detroit Tigers games and even took him to major events like the legendary world middleweight boxing championship fight between marvelous Marvin Hagler and Detroit's own Thomas the Hitman Hurns. The bout that went down on April 15th 1985 in Las Vegas was a historic moment in sports and Wershay's presence in the Curry's crew symbolized how deep the teenager was embedded in their world. The drive-by shooting on April 29th that took the life of 13-year-old Damian Lucas stands as one of the darkest moments in the Curry organization's history. The tragedy highlighted the violent and often careless nature of Detroit's drug underworld during the 1980s. Damian Lucas an orphan living with his uncle Leon Lucas in Northwest Detroit was fatally hit in the chest while watching tv with his younger brother Frankie. The shooting wasn't meant for Damian but was actually a message aimed at Leon Lucas a heroin dealer and associate of the Curry brothers. Leon had supposedly failed to get tickets for the Curry's Las Vegas trip to the Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hurns fight making tensions worse that was already high because of a debt owed for cash and heroin that got seized during a previous police raid. According to the FBI Leo Curry gave the order directing Wyman Jenkins to set up the hit. Sydney Wack Goodwin and Walter Waldo Owens were brought in as the shooters and given Mac 10 and Mac 11 machine pistols. Kevin Weasel Colbert was the getaway driver. The shooters hit two spots that night. Robert Walton's house where a parked car got lit up with bullets and Leon Lucas's residence where at least 10 shots got fired into the house killing Damian. Leon Lucas later said in an interview that Leo Curry and Wyman Jenkins had directly threatened him on the morning of the shooting warning him about the drive-by. Despite all this a man who had nothing to do with the beef paid the ultimate price with his young life. The feds kept building their case against the Curry organization through 1985 and into 1986 with white boy Rick feeding them intel the whole time. Rick was getting deeper and deeper into the game even as he was working with the FBI his double life was spinning out of control and the pressure from both sides was mounting heavy. By mid-1986 the federal investigation had built up enough evidence and the hammer came down hard. Johnny Curry got hit with federal charges related to his massive drug operation and the conspiracy around it. The charges carried serious time and everybody knew the empire was crumbling. Leo Curry caught charges too and the whole organization that had dominated Detroit's east side for nearly a decade started falling apart. The arrests sent shockwaves through Detroit's underworld showing that even the deepest political connections couldn't shield you from federal prosecution. Johnny Curry ended up doing serious federal time getting locked up in the early 1990s for his role in the cocaine trafficking operation and the related violence. Leo Curry faced similar charges and prison sentences that kept him off the streets for years. The fall of the Curry Brothers marked a turning point in Detroit's drug era showing that no matter how untouchable you felt no matter how much power you had access to the feds would eventually catch up. White boy Rick Wershay's cooperation had proven to be devastating to the organization he had been embedded in since he was just a young teenager. His story became a blueprint for how law enforcement used informants to dismantle major drug operations from the inside. The legacy of the Curry Brothers stands as a complex chapter in Detroit's history representing both the allure and the inevitable destruction that comes with the drug trade. They were icons of a particular moment in the city's underworld embodying the flashy wealth and raw power that drew so many young people into that life. But their rise and fall also serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of that path. The violence they were involved in the destruction of lives like Damian Lucas's and the betrayals from people close to them like white boy Rick ultimately showed that the drug game pays out death and prison sentences no matter how beautiful the lifestyle looks from the outside. The Curry Brothers left an indelible mark on Detroit's criminal history but that mark is one written in blood prison time and broken families. Their story remains relevant today as a cautionary tale about the seductive power of quick money and street life and the true cost that always comes due in the end. The Curry Brothers' legacy isn't one of triumph or success it's a lesson in the inevitable fall that follows when you build your empire on poison and violence. They were Detroit legends for sure but they're legends defined by tragedy, betrayal, and the knowledge that the streets never let anybody win. Real talk fam that's the story of the Curry Brothers a chapter of Detroit's underworld that still echoes through the city today.
